I really enjoyed the production of this project, and I’m really pleased with the final video.
I asked for some critical feedback from a friend who used to study media, and he said that his only criticisms were that it was very similar to the Lasse Gjersens videos, which are well known in the internet.
It was a lot of fun to be able to film this, and the nature of the video meant that we were free to explore different camera techniques which was good for us. It was a big bonus to have someone with musical talent in our group, because we were able to discuss how the song would sound and she would be there to show us what notes we would need to play in order to create that tune.
Filming was really simple, and we got it all done in a couple of sessions. One filming location was at Ginas house, and the other was in one of the sound recording studions which was kindly lent to us for an afternoon at BU.

It was easy to get everyone together for filming, but a couple of people found it hard to keep their concentration and felt the need to leave to make toast halfway through filming in the studio, which was a bit of a time waster and a let down, but we managed to get there in the end.

I do wish that we could have looked more into lighting in some of the locations, but I think that if it looked all set up with perfect lighting, then it would loose its ‘homemade’ look which is what we wanted to go for.

I really liked that all the instruments came together but started at different points in the song. There were a couple of variations made before the final product, they’re all uploaded and on my blog for you to see. You will notice a change in the start, and how th transitions change. There was an idea to film the video so that different people walk into the scene and swap instruments, and although it would be a refreshing idea, was decided against in the end. I disagreed with it because it would have everything look messy, you can only have so much going on.

Heres the final version of out video. Notice the transition between scenes is different. I much prefer this edit because you can see everyone playing together sooner and it has more of a gradual process as they only come into view when they start playing the instrument

Heres the first version of our video.

Heres the first render copy of the Drum sequence :)

This has to be my favourite Stop motion sequence EVER! Just wanted to share it with everyone on the subject of stop motion and viral videos x

I forgot to mention that the music we are using was composed by Gina and we’re using it with her permission so we dont have to worry about copyright when we upload it :) It’s important to think about copyright issues when making a video so that your video doesn’t get removed for breaching it and using material without permission. It would be a shame for our video to get lots of hits then have it removed for this.

Heres another stop motion music video I found on youtube, The editing style is slightly differrent though, And this guy is clearly showing off ;)

Pictures from filming work in the recording studio :) It’s looking good

Production has started!!!!
It’s going rather well. we’ve been able to borrow a music recording studio in Bournemouth uni which has a drumkit in it and a bass. Because we’re not going to be using any of the recording equipment, they’ve let us use it free of charge on a quiet afternoon :) . We’re going to film these two instruments in one filming session so that we dont have to keep coming back to film different parts. This also helps with the continuity and consistency of the footage.
We’ve already filmed the Clarinet/Sax and Keyboard round Ginas house. We filmed it in a house because we want to show that the people in the video are all from different places and so a change of background helps to create this effect.
We’re changing our clothes and positions we are standing in throughout the video to make it more visually interesting and more entertaining for the audience. We think that by doing this it gived the audience a break from seeing the same thing, and makes sense because everything else is changing too.

Okay, so our stop motion video hasn’t come from out ideas alone. One video in particular which has inspired us is this video my Lasse Gjertsen with his stop moption music video.
His editing technique and combination of more than 1 instrument to compose a tune was what impressed us the most because it’s different and quirky which is what atracts people to it. His editing style in stop motion but at the same time, there is realtime movement in there.
